Tyres – a valuable asset sensitive to good management
Tyres are a current resources industry headache.
Professor Michael Hood (CRC Mining, Univ of Qld) stated that 1 “About 50% of the costs in surface
mining operations are attributable to
the truck fleet . . . and tyres
typically represent 20-25% of total
fleet operating costs. Hence, any
technology that potentially can
reduce tyre costs would be
advantageous. Today, with the
mining industry booming and the
demand for such tyres greatly
exceeding the supply, the
opportunity for a technology that
can help preserve tyre life is
substantial.”
Tyre life must be and can be
maximised. Good roads will
contribute to this, as described in
the technical paper
